AboutCormac McCarthy was born in Rhode Island on July 20, 1933, born to Charles Joseph and Gladys Christina McGrail McCarthy. McCarthy renamed himself Cormac after the Irish King. At the age of four McCarthy and his family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee where his Father became a lawyer for Tennessee Valley Authority. McCarthy was raised Roman Catholic. He attended Catholic High School in Knoxville, then went to the University of Tennessee in 1951 . McCarthy's major at the University was liberal arts. McCarthy joined the U.S. Air Force in 1953 where he served four years, two of them stationed in Alaska. McCarthy returned to the university, where he published “A Drowning Incident” and “Wake for Susan” in the student literary magazine, this is where he won the Ingram-Merrill Award for creative writing around 1959-60.McCarthy left the university again, and moved to Chicago where he worked as an engineer while also writing his first novel. McCarthy later married Lee Holleman. The couple had one son, Cullen before shorty afterwards divorcing. Before Finishing his first novel , McCarthy had been invite to find out more about his Irish ancestors so he went on a trip and met Anne DeLisle whom was a singer/dancer. They settled in Ibiza, then later in 1976 divorcing with his second wife. He married a third time and this time witha woman named Jenniger Winkler. Together they had a son named John Francis. This marriage led to his moving to Tesque, new Mexico where he is now with his wife and kids.
